Autavia
Reference Table
|
|
Guide to This Reference
Table.
The following are some of the conventions used in this
Reference Table:
- Case
Measurements -- "Across
the Front" of the case means the diameter of the
case, measured across the front (not including the
crown), "Lug to Lug" means from the top of the top
lug to the bottom of the bottom lug; "Thickness"
means from the back of the case-back to the top of the
crystal
- Model
Ref.: All
Autavias have rotating outer bezels. Generally, the
"Model Reference" included in the Reference Table
describes the type of bezel used on the watch, as folows:
M -- bezel marked for Minutes; H
--bezel marked for Hours; MH --bezel marked
for both Minutes and Hours;
T -- bezel marked with Tachymeter scale,
P -- bezel for diving ("plongee", in French) marked
(a) in minutes (1 through 15), then every 5 minutes,
or (b) with decompression scale.
- Description:
All cases are stainless steel, unless otherwise
indicated.
- Movement:
Movements are as follows -- 72, 92, 724, 7730, 7732,
7733, 7734, 7736, 7740 and 7741 are by Valjoux;
11, 11-i, 11-GMT, 12, 14 and 15 are Chronomatic
movements, made by the joint venture between Heuer,
Breitling, Buren and Dubois-Depraz. For additional
information, see our webpage on the
Development of the Chronomatic
Movements.
- Crystals
are either plastic / plexi (P), or mineral
(M).
- Registers
/ Date: shows number of registers and
maximum time recorded; shows when date is
included on manual wind models (All
automatics: Calibre's 11, 12,
14,15, have date).
- Catalog Dates
(or estimated): Dates refer to catalogs published by
Heuer. "Not Shown" means that this version of the Autavia
was not shown in any Heuer catalog. "Est" means that
the watch is not shown in any catalog and the date of
production has been estimated.
- Price New:
Prices are retail prices, as shown in Heuer catalogs or
on price lists. Prices
are for chronographs on straps, unless "bracelet" is
indicated.
- Range of
Reported Serial Numbers: For each version of the
Autavia, we indicate the lowest reported serial number
and the highest reported serial number. There will be
other samples within this range, but using these high and
low numbers may allow the researcher to estimate the age
of a watch and also confirm that a particular sample has
not be re-cased. There may be multiple "bands" od
serial numbers used for a certain model (for example, the
very popular "Viceroys").
What's Included; What's
Not Included. This
Reference Table includes all the Autavias that were produced
from 1962 through 1985. This Reference Table does not
include other chronographs that Heuer produced using the
Autavia case (for example, various versions of the Skipper
and the Abercrombie & Fitch Seafarer, both of which used
Autavia cases). We
point out that there may have been other versions of
Autavias available by special order (for example, versions
with speical bezels).
We have not included the so-called "Poor
Man's" Autavias, the chronographs that Heuer
manufactured for other brands (for example, Zodiac and
Bulova), which may be identical to the Heuer Autavias (other
than the name on the dial and movement).
Please Help Us Build this
Autavia Reference Table.
This expanded and
updated Autavia Reference Table is being released on
December 3, 2011, and is very much a work in progress. We
would enthusiastically welcome your contributions and
comments. The following will be especially
helpful:
- Photos of Your
Autavias. We will continue to add photos to the
Autavia section of OnTheDash, and are trying to gather
photos of as many models and versions as possible. If you
have an Autavia that is not shown OnTheDash, or have nice
photos of a rare model, please send us
photos!
- Serial
Numbers. We have set up a column in the Reference
Table to show the range of serial numbers for each of the
models and versions of the Autavia and we need to
populate this column with additional serial numbers. So
please send us photos of your Autavia and tell us the
serial number.
- Comments,
Suggestions and Corrections. We hope that this Table
will be useful for collectors of the vintage Autavias,
and we will welcome any comments, suggestions or
corrections. Please
send any photos, serial numbers, questions, comments,
suggestions or other messages to Jeff Stein at
onthedash@bellsouth.net.
History / Thanks.
Our first Autavia
Reference Table was published in May 2003, based on
information provided by Hans Schrag, Bruce Mackie, and the
late Chuck Maddox. This first Autavia Reference Table
included 46 versions of the Autavia, and was the first
Reference Table published by OnTheDash.
Eight years later, we
have a vibrant community of enthusiasts who collect the
vintage Heuers, with a rich exchange of information about
all aspects of these watches. Many members of the OnTheDash
/ Chronocentric Heuer Discussion Forum community have made
valuable contributions to this 2011 update of the Autavia
Reference Table, by contributing photos and sharing
information. Special thanks to Paolo Bernardi, Peter
Møller and Mark Moss who made exceptional
contributions to the update of this Autavia Reference Table.

Overview of the First
Automatic Autavias, Reference 1163 and 1563.
Heuer
designed entirely new cases for the three models of
automatic chronograph that it introduced, in 1969, the
Autavia, Carrera and Monaco. These cases measure TBD, across
the face of the watch (not including the crown), and have a
thickness of TBD mm, from the back of the case to the top
surface of the bezel. Crystals are plastic. The Caliber 15
models were introduced in 1972, using the same case as the
1163 models.
Dials and Hands Used in
Automatic Autavias -- Reference 1163 and 1563, described in
Section E:
- Markers -- 1st
execution markers are polished steel, with ridges;
2nd execution markers are polished steel, with
inserts that contrast with the color of the dial -- white
inserts for black dials, and black inserts for white
dials ("Sifferts"); 3rd execution markers are
rectangular, with wider, full-length lume (similar to
markers used in the Calculators)
- Dials --
"Economy" dial refers to the configuration used on the
Viceroy Specials -- 2nd execution markers, with numerals
1-through-12 on the hour recorder. "Economy" refers
to the fact that these Viceroy Specials were sold at a
lower price than the standard models; quality of the
Economy dials is the same as the quality of the standard
dials.
- Hands -- 1st
execution hands are polished steel, with luminous
inserts; 2nd execution hands are polished steel
with luminous and black inserts; 3rd execution
hands are brushed steel, with red inserts and tips
(on Viceroy models) or blue inserts and tips (on
Siffert models); 4th execution hands (used on the
1563 Autavias) are painted, with large luminous
inserts.
|
|
E. Automatic Autavias,
Reference 1163 and 1563 -- The
Reference 1163 and 1563 cases measure 42.3 mm Across the
Front and 47.5 mm Lug to Lug, with a Thickness of 15.6 mm.
Measurement between the lugs is 20 mm..

G. Automatic Autavias,
Reference 11630 and 15630
-- Reference 11630 and 15630 cases measure 42.2 mm Across
the Front, 47,5 mm Lug-to-Lug, with a Thickness of 15.0 mm.
The diameter of the bezel is 40.3 mm. Measurement between
the lugs is 20mm. The easiest way to distinguish the 11630
case from the earlier 1163 caes is that the 11630 case has a
thick, black inner tension ring, designed to hold the
mineral crystal. Bezels are bi-directional.
